Air pollution is the leading environmental cause of disease and one of the leading preventable causes of mortality and disease worldwide. WHO says that 99% of the world’s population is currently inhaling toxic air. Every year, 7 million people die as a result of air pollution, with 90% of them living in low- and middle-income nations.

On September 7, 2022, the third International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies will be observed with the theme ‘The Air We Share.’ It was on September 7, 2020, when the
United Nations declared the first International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, with the theme “Clean Air For All.”

It aimed to establish a global community of action to promote cooperation at the national, regional, and international levels, encouraging nations to collaborate to combat air pollution and ensure clean air for all.

The evidence base supporting the harm caused by air pollution to the human body is fast expanding, pointing to considerable impairment caused by even low levels of several air pollutants.

Particulate matter, primarily PM 2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and into the circulation, causing Cardiovascular, Cerebrovascular (stroke), and Respiratory disorders.

The seasonal particulate matter, 2.5 level in Central India was 15.6% higher this year than the previous summer. According to a report by the Centre for Science and Environment, Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh was one of the five states with the worst summer air quality this year.

Various National and International organisations with help of the Madhya Pradesh government are working together to lower air pollution in the state.
