COP 15: Why biodiversity conference is important for 2022 and for us
According to studies, there are an estimated one million species at risk of extinction worldwide and this extinction crisis has critical implications for humanity.
Bhopal, India – Knitting the world together for the sake of protecting the nature and halting biodiversity loss around the world, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) conference will be held in Montreal, Quebec, the seat of the UN CBD Secretariat, from December 7 – 19, 2022.
According to studies, there are an estimated one million species at risk of extinction worldwide and this extinction crisis has critical implications for humanity.
This global convening is expected to result in the adoption of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the ‘Paris agreement for Nature’.
The conference aims to halt and reverse the alarming loss of biodiversity worldwide. The focus of Montreal conference will be on agreeing on a new, 10-year Global Biodiversity Framework: humanity’s roadmap towards a more nature-positive future.
Union Environment Minister, Bhupender Yadav had said that the Indian Government has mainstreamed biodiversity consideration in all key sectors of development and promoting human well-being and inclusive growth. He said this during COP15 UN Biodiversity Conference, Round Table on ‘Putting biodiversity on a Path of Recovery’.
At the first phase of the Meeting, India had committed to restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, more than its earlier target of 21 million hectares.
In the words of the Government of Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, “This important international conference will be a landmark event for Canada, with thousands of delegates from around the world gathered in Montréal to take action on protecting nature”.
